LFHD Epidemiologists serve our residents by:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Monitoring for the occurrence of reportable and emerging diseases or suspected outbreaks of illness;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Providing recommendations and guidance to prevent the spread of communicable diseases;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Investigating outbreaks of disease; and\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Responding to public health emergencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Healthcare professionals and laboratories are required to report over 70 diseases and conditions in Virginia to help protect the public\u2019s health. The reported data enables public health agencies to act quickly to prevent the spread of disease, identify and respond to outbreaks, and provide an overall snapshot of disease trends at the local, state, and national levels.<\/p>\n

    LFHD Epidemiologists conduct investigations into reportable diseases and outbreaks and takes steps to prevent others from becoming ill. These steps might include messaging to raise public awareness, pulling a contaminated item from stores, or offering preventive treatments to people who have been exposed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
