{"id":1336,"date":"2022-09-09T13:51:41","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T13:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/clinicians\/?page_id=1336"},"modified":"2022-09-09T14:33:13","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T14:33:13","slug":"covid-19-update-for-virginia-36","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/clinicians\/covid-19-update-for-virginia-36\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Update for Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/04\/Letterhead-Greene_2022-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1700\" height=\"452\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b>COVID-19 Update for Virginia<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">September 9, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dear Colleague:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am writing to provide you with brief u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pdates on COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CDC Recommends Updated COVID-19 Boosters<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On August 31, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/covid-19-bivalent-vaccine-boosters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emergency Use Authorization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the updated Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 bivalent vaccines to be used as booster doses for the prevention of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection in people aged 12 years and older at least two months following a completed primary series or booster vaccination.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bivalent vaccines, also known as \u201cupdated boosters,\u201d contain messenger RNA (mRNA) components of the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 and the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to discuss the vaccines, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0901-covid-19-booster.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on September 1, 2022, that both updated boosters be placed into use.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent, is authorized for use as a single booster dose in individuals aged 12 years and older.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent, is authorized for use as a single booster dose in individuals aged 18 years and older.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-moderna-pfizer-biontech-bivalent-covid-19-vaccines-use?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\"><b>no longer authorized<\/b><\/a><b> as booster doses for individuals aged 12 years and older.\u00a0 Only individuals aged 5\u201311 years can receive a monovalent booster dose at this time.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Healthcare providers should report vaccine administration errors to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). To file an electronic report, please see the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/reportevent.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VAERS website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additional guidance is available in CDC\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/covid-19-vaccines-us.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interim Clinical Considerations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Coadministration of COVID-19 and Other Vaccines<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With influenza (flu) season approaching, providers are encouraged to offer flu, COVID-19, and other age-appropriate recommended vaccines during the same visit to people with no known contraindication(s).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no minimum interval between COVID-19 vaccination and monkeypox vaccination (either JYNNEOS or ACAM2000).\u00a0 However, adolescent or young adult males might consider waiting four weeks after monkeypox vaccination before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, because of the observed risk for myocarditis and\/or pericarditis after receipt of ACAM2000 and mRNA (i.e., Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech) and Novavax COVID-19 vaccines and the unknown risk for myocarditis and\/or pericarditis after JYNNEOS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For more information, please see CDC\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/covid-19-vaccines-us.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interim Clinical Considerations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/admin\/administer-vaccines.html#multiple-injections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Best practices for administering multiple vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>EVUSHELD<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/154701\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EVUSHELD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a long-acting monoclonal antibody (mAb) medication that is FDA authorized for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) against COVID-19. The drug is given as two intramuscular injections every 6 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s indicated for adults and children aged 12 years and older, weighing at least 88 pounds, moderately to severely immunocompromised, or for people who have experienced a severe adverse reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine such that an additional COVID-19 vaccine would be medically contraindicated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EVUSHELD is not meant as a substitute for a COVID-19 vaccine in people who are<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eligible for COVID-19 immunization but elect not to receive it.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (HHS\/ASPR) has noted that EVUSHELD use is not as robust as expected.
