{"id":1022,"date":"2021-12-14T15:44:32","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T15:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/clinicians\/?page_id=1022"},"modified":"2022-05-24T17:36:20","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T17:36:20","slug":"covid-19-update-for-virginia-26","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/clinicians\/covid-19-update-for-virginia-26\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Update for Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2022\/05\/Letterhead-Oliver-2019-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1692\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>COVID-19 Update for Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">December 14, 2021<\/p>\n<p>Dear Colleague:<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your continued partnership in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0 Please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/\">Virginia Department of Health (VDH) website<\/a> for current clinical and public health guidance, epidemiologic data, and other information.\u00a0 Updates on the following topics are included in this correspondence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Omicron (B.1.1.529) Variant Detected in Virginia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>COVID-19 Booster Doses Recommended for Everyone Aged 16 Years and Older<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>COVID-19 Therapeutics Update<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Widespread Flu Activity in Virginia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Omicron (B.1.1.529) Variant Detected in Virginia <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>VDH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/first-confirmed-case-of-omicron-b-1-1-529-covid-19-variant-identified-in-virginia\/\">announced<\/a> the first confirmed COVID-19 Omicron case in Virginia on December 9.\u00a0 Additional Omicron cases are expected across the Commonwealth and these cases will be tracked on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/see-the-numbers\/covid-19-data-insights\/variants\/\">VDH\u2019s Variants Dashboard<\/a>.\u00a0 Despite the detection of Omicron in Virginia, more than 99% of sequenced COVID-19 cases in Virginia are currently caused by the Delta variant and COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are increasing.\u00a0 Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7050e1.htm?s_cid=mm7050e1_w\">published a summary<\/a> about the initial Omicron cases in the United States.\u00a0 Please encourage all your eligible patients to get vaccinated, get boosted, and layer other prevention strategies.\u00a0 For the holidays, VDH updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/get-the-latest-guidance\/social-gatherings\/\">Social Gatherings and Events website<\/a> to summarize steps people can take to celebrate safely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Booster Doses Recommended for Everyone Aged 16 Years and Older<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On December 9, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-expands-eligibility-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-booster-dose-16-and-17\">authorized<\/a> and CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2021\/s1208-16-17-booster.html\">recommended<\/a> a single Pfizer-BioNTech booster dose for teenagers aged 16 and 17 years, at least 6 months after their initial Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination series.\u00a0 Because the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is the only vaccine authorized for people in this age group, they should <u>only<\/u> receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or Comirnaty as their booster dose.\u00a0 Everyone ages 18 and older should get a booster shot either when they are 6 months after their initial Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna series or 2 months after their initial Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine; they can choose which COVID-19 vaccine to receive as a booster shot.\u00a0 <strong>Providers in Virginia can immediately begin administering booster doses in accordance with these CDC recommendations.\u00a0 <\/strong>FDA revised its Pfizer-BioNTech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/comirnaty-and-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine#additional\">fact sheets<\/a> for providers and recipients.\u00a0 CDC updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/covid-19-vaccines-us.html\">\u00a0Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines Currently Approved or Authorized in the United States<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/vaccination-provider-support.html\">Provider Requirements and <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/vaccination-provider-support.html\">Support<\/a>.\u00a0 VDH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2021\/04\/COVID-Vaccine-Standing-Order.pdf\">revised its<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/134\/2021\/04\/COVID-Vaccine-Standing-Order.pdf\">standing orders<\/a> for dispensing and administering COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Therapeutics Update<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On December 3, FDA expanded the emergency use authorization (EUA) for bamlanivimab and etesevimab (\u201cBam\/Ete\u201d), two monoclonal antibodies that are administered together.\u00a0 Bam\/Ete can now be administered to younger pediatric patients, including newborns, for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 or postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) in those at high risk for severe COVID-19; previously, this combination therapy was authorized for patients 12 years and older.\u00a0 FDA issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-expands-authorization-two-monoclonal-antibodies-treatment-and-post-exposure-prevention-covid-19?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">news release<\/a> and the revised EUA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/145802\/download\">package insert<\/a> on December 3.<\/p>\n<p>On December 8, FDA granted an EUA to AstraZeneca\u2019s Evusheld (tixagevimab co-packaged with cilgavimab and administered together) for the pre-exposure prophylaxis (prevention) of COVID-19 in certain adults and pediatric individuals.\u00a0 This product is authorized for persons aged 12 years or older (weighing at least 88 pounds) who are not currently infected with COVID-19, who have not been exposed to COVID-19, and who either have moderately to severely compromised immune systems or a history of severe adverse reactions to a COVID-19 vaccine and\/or its component(s) such that vaccination is not recommended.\u00a0 FDA issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-new-long-acting-monoclonal-antibodies-pre-exposure?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">news release<\/a> about Evusheld and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/154701\/download\">EUA package insert<\/a> on December 8.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Government has purchased doses of Evusheld.\u00a0 From communications with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), it appears the <strong><u>initial<\/u><\/strong> allocation of the drug will be small (1200 doses) and available in the Commonwealth either this week or next.\u00a0 Available initial doses will likely go to larger medical centers that treat more immunocompromised patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Widespread Flu Activity in Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the week ending December 4, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/influenza-flu-in-virginia\/influenza-surveillance\/\">geographic spread of influenza (flu) in Virginia<\/a> jumped from \u201csporadic\u201d to \u201cwidespread\u201d based on reported laboratory results, influenza-like illness (ILI), and outbreaks.\u00a0 Because flu and COVID-19 clinical presentations are similar, both COVID-19 and flu testing are needed to distinguish these infections.\u00a0 Please encourage all patients 6 months or older to get vaccinated <strong>now<\/strong> against flu to lower their risk of infection, hospitalization, and death.\u00a0 This is particularly important with the upcoming winter holidays.\u00a0 The COVID-19 and the flu vaccine can be administered at the same time.\u00a0 CDC guidance for managing patients who are infected with or exposed to flu is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/index.htm\">available<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you again for your continued partnership as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0 If you have questions about COVID-19, please contact your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/local-health-districts\/\">local health department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>M.
