It\u2019s a community-driven approach to public health that looks beyond symptoms to the root causes of health challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the 2024-2025 cycle, we convened a MAPP2Health Steering Committee made up of community leaders, local government staff, nonprofit partners, and residents from across the district. This group has advised the Core Group from start to finish \u2014 helping to design surveys, identify priorities, and shape recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The result is the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/2025-MAPP2Health_Sept25.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">2025 MAPP2Health Report (PDF)<\/span><\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">which includes insights from more than 1,100 residents across Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties. But the report isn\u2019t just about naming the region\u2019s biggest health challenges. It also highlights community-driven solutions and calls on local governments, organizations, and neighbors to work together, advocate, and invest in systems that support healthier lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/2025-MAPP2Health_Sept25.pdf\">Download a PDF of the 2025 MAPP2Health Report (PDF)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/2025-MAPP2Health_WebReport.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/MAPP2Health-Cover-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/MAPP2Health-Cover-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/MAPP2Health-Cover.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What We Heard<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2024, MAPP2Health Core Group listened to residents in many ways:<\/span><\/div>\n<ul data-end=\"1432\" data-start=\"1105\">\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Door-to-door surveys<\/b>\u00a0in Nelson County<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>One-on-one interviews<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>An online community survey<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>An online stakeholder survey<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>A Photovoice project<\/b>\u00a0with high school students<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Focus groups<\/b> with people who are often left out of health policy and planning.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The message was clear:\u00a0health is about much more than doctor\u2019s visits. It\u2019s about the food people can buy, the transportation they can rely on, the support they can find, and the systems that either ease or add to their daily struggles.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Learn more about our<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/blue-ridge\/communitysurvey\/\">2025 MAPP2Health Community Surveys<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Top Health Priorities<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From all the conversations and data, three urgent priorities emerged. These will guide the next three years of health improvement efforts:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>1. Chronic Conditions \u2014 obesity and mental health<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People know what they need to stay healthy: affordable healthy food, safe spaces for physical activity, and access to mental health support. But many said they lacked the time, money, or systems to make that possible. Mental health, especially, came up again and again \u2014 residents want<strong>\u00a0local, community-based services and safe places to connect and feel heard.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>2. Healthcare Access<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While most residents had insurance, many still struggled to get timely, affordable, and respectful care. Long waits (especially for dental and mental health), confusing systems, and high costs were major concerns. Spanish-speaking residents and LGBTQ+ community members, in particular, often felt unwelcome. People expect care that\u2019s affordable, nearby, and delivered with respect but it was surprisingly hard to come by.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>3. Social Drivers of Health \u2014 healthy food, economic stability, and transportation<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Health starts in the grocery store, on the bus, and at work. Residents told us they need access to healthy food, reliable transportation, and enough income to cover basics like housing and healthcare. Without these essentials, staying healthy feels out of reach.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">What\u2019s Next<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next up: creating a <b>Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP)<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 a roadmap to turn recommendations into measurable action over the next three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Developing the CHIP will take all of us: residents, community leaders, nonprofits, businesses, and elected officials. Together, we\u2019ll set clear goals, strategies, and ways to measure progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We\u2019re looking for individuals and organizations ready to help \u2014 whether by leading projects, joining a workgroup, or helping shape the plan in your community.
